Alexandra Education Committee
Alexandra Education Committee (AEC) are an organisation who believe that true potential is released through education. Their purpose is to provide excellent education and psycho-social support for schoolchildren from disadvantaged backgrounds in and around Alexandra Township, located in Johannesburg, South Africa.
By focusing their efforts on the children and youth of this low-income community, they hope that the future generations will be more empowered to create and embrace lasting positive changes. This awesome organisation asked us for help to develop their new website to help promote themselves, the students they help, the people who contribute and the results of their generous contributions.
In assessing the AEC project it became apparent that, as with most of our clients, we would need to fix their logo first. The old logo features extremely bright red, green and blue hues which clashed heavily with one another. To fix this we desaturated and the adjusted the colours subtly so that they could all coexist in the logo without hurting your eyes.
AEC did not have an established visual language either, so we devised one that would be easy for the staff to repeat. Photos would be desaturated slightly and the site would feature simple highlighting using just one shade of blue. These hues of grey and blue on white present a professional and trustworthy appearance, vital for small charities that rely on public funding.
The user experience for the AEC website was crafted to allow visitors to get as much information as possible about the organisation as quickly as possible. An alternating image-content pattern was created using images taken at events and in classrooms where students from the program attend school.
Other features included a full listing of the staff members, featured students who have gone through the program and are now excelling at school and coverage of events in the form of news and a blog. Further to this we added the ability to donate through the chosen portal, backabuddy.
